Screening Tests Offered at the 2009 CMC Health Fair

Flu Shot  –  $25

This is the SEASONAL flu shot, NOT the Swine Flu (H1N1), which is not yet available.  This vaccination is available to adults only; no children will be served.

VAP Test  –  $55

The Vertical Auto Profile (VAP) Test is an expanded cholesterol test that provides valuable information that can identify hidden heart disease risk above and beyond the Lipid Profile.  The VAP test includes all of the Lipid Profile (below) and more.  In fact, the VAP Test identifies twice as many people at risk than routine cholesterol tests, including those with inherited risk factors who often develop premature heart disease.  It also measures cholesterol subclasses that play important roles in the development of heart disease.  This additional information allows your doctor to improve the detection of heart disease risk from about 40 percent to 90 percent, and provides a foundation for patient-specific treatment plans.  The VAP test is emerging as the new standard of care for cholesterol risk assessment.  You do not need to be fasting for this test, unless you are specifically looking at your triglyceride results.

Lipid Profile  –  $20

This blood test includes:  total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and cholesterol/HDL ratio.  Twelve hours of fasting is recommended for the most accurate results.

Homocysteine  –  $80

Homocysteine, an amino acid in the blood, is a substance produced as the body digests protein.  Excess levels are related to a higher risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.  It is an excellent marker for the status of a person’s vascular fitness.  Other evidence suggests that homocysteine may have an effect on atherosclerosis by damaging the inner lining of arteries and promoting blood clots.

HsCRP  –  $35

High sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (HsCRP) is recognized for its ability to predict future coronary events in apparently healthy individuals.  It assesses acute inflammation, which is an indicator of risk for cardiovascular disease.  HsCRP is an excellent marker for the risk of a heart attack because acute inflammation increases the potential for plaque rupture.  In order to assess any cardiac correlation, please delay this test for two weeks after any inflammatory episodes.

Glucose  –  $8

Glucose, or fasting blood sugar, is a basic screening for Diabetes.  Twelve hours of fasting is recommended for the most accurate results.

A1c  –  $35

A1c measures the amount of sugar in the blood over a period of 2-3 months (the life of the red blood cell).  This is a test for known diabetics.

PSA  –  $30

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a prostate cancer screening test for men.  Please note that the latest research states that PSA screening tests should be done in conjunction with a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE).  It is recommended that you make an appointment with your physician for the DRE part of the screening.

Body Fat Analysis  –  $3

Body Fat Analysis will give you specific details about your weight by giving you percentage of body fat, lean muscle, and water.  For best results, do not drink coffee or exercise 12 hours prior to test.  Drink plenty of water for 24 hours in advance.

Osteoporosis/Bone Density Scan  –  $20

This painless test tells you just how strong your bones are and your risk for osteoporosis.
